Heart and Soul by T'Pau
Since I've been doing this little blog (was it the late 50's when I started?), I've taken the time to do a little research, mostly to find the little album cover for the song that I'm going to babble about. So when today's song hit, I bounced out to Google, did a little poking around. My impression of this song was always pretty high, I liked it. Certainly not my favorite song of all time, but different enough to be good without being "just another one of those songs..." And that's about all I knew about it. I sorta remember the video (some girl singing) and I placed them squarely in the "One Hit Wonder" bin of mind. I also knew that their name came from Star Trek, some Vulcan leader or something. But that was about it.
But I've learned more, yes I have. The girl singing: her name is Carol Decker. The song "Heart and Souls" was released in 1987 on the album "Bridge of Spies". I would have placed this earlier on the 80's timeline, but oh well. As near as I can tell they/she released 6 total (1 in 1998!) albums and a couple of greatest hits compendiums. How a band with one hit and 3 albums has the audacity to label their 4rd album "The Very Best of T'Pau" is beyond me. And worse their 5th album is titled "The Greatest Hits". Did the list change between albums 4 & 5? But I digress.
I also swing over to Amazon to read a few reviews and to sample some of the other songs to see if maybe my messed up brain has forgotten about some other treasure from this band. No such chance here. But I'm reading the reviews...and statements like "This is the best album ever...from the greatest band ever". Things like that.
Hold on now.
This is T'Pau we're talking about. Now maybe the greatest album ever (speaking only theoretically here, I have no real data), but NO CHANCE you could honestly say greatest band ever. They had one hit! They produced 3, maybe 4 albums! I think the Beatles/Stones/J Geils/Springsteen/etc... people might have something to say in this regard. But I digress again.
I listened to the little snips of songs and I can honestly say that I liked what I heard. I'm willing to take a flyer on the album. The reviews are all very positive, and none of them appear to be related to this Decker woman. So maybe I can pick it up on Ebay or Half and give it a spin.
