Crummy 80's Song of the Day

Circle in the Sand by Belinda Carlisle

When the GoGo's first came out, it was like, cool an all girl group playing reasonable pop/rock. They launched out about 3 big hits and then by the mid 80's had seriously flamed out. There was all sorts of "MTV News" talk about fighting and bickering in the band. There was always the rumor that some of the girls didn't really know how to play their instruments and a big dose of substance abuse. I think I remember reading that their lead singer, Belinda Carlisle was in rehab drying out, or something like that. So she tossed out a solo album, innovatively titled "Belinda" and it had a hit "Mad About You". She then tosses out this album with a couple of hits, Circle in the Sand being one of them.

[Warning: obligatory negative and cynical thoughts to follow.]

I don't like this song. I don't like it all. Never did, never will. I don't know if it's the droning sound of her voice or what, but I don't like it. I liked "Mad About You" from her first LP, even liked "Heaven on Earth", the #1 hit from this one. Just don't make me listen to "Circle in the Sand".

[End negative droning.]

I have to say I'm astonished about the positive reviews of this album on Amazon. With close reading it would seem that most of the reviews are along the "who cares about the songs, she's HOT!" kind of style. But many of them actually profess to have listened to the whole thing are a commenting about it. Can't say that I've listened to a whole B. Carlisle album. I remember listening to the first couple of GoGo's albums all the way through. There was a pretty good reason why you didn't hear anything but "Vacation".......

A teacher's credentials...

Kristie told me this funny story..... The School has been blessed for years with a teacher who has dutifully taught yearbook class to the Senior High students. She abruptly resigned a couple of weeks ago, for personal reasons and nothing to do with the School or the job per se. In a mad scramble, the principal scrounged up a "suitable" replacement. This replacement was described as "a mom". Fast forward to yesterday. Kristie was doing new employee orientation and this new hire was present. Kristie did emphasize this person seems to be a terrific individual and an all around nice lady. When Kristie introduced herself she stated: "So you're the new yearbook teacher....nice to meet you". The new hire replied, "Thanks, do you know anything about this yearbook stuff? Because I don't..." Kelly signed up for yearbook this year...she already has Digital Photography, a questionable class and now Yearbook. Wednesday Elective Day is going t...
