Music Man Memories - Saturday, April 14 & Sunday, April 15

Standard disclaimer: these are just some notes that I accumulated over the course of the last few months, when I was too "busy" to document them here.

Saturday, April 14 & Sunday, April 15

We spent 15 plus hours with my dedicated crew painting the flats - we had nine 2-sided 8 ft by 10 ft scenery flats, and they all got painted in one day! I had a lot of help that day with a bunch of kids and parents showing up and lending a hand. Our logistics were complicated that day due to the fact that the School had been rented out to a very demanding company for the entire day (noon to midnight!). So we had to set up in the north hall, on the carpet and were required to remain quiet and virtually invisible. I sincerely got the feeling that everyone would've preferred that I not even try to do it that day, but we were running out of time and, quite frankly, no one had the gumption to say I couldn't! We covered everything with dropclothes and paper and I prayed that we would have no paint castrophes...I had already had my share of those and my emotions were tinder-dry. One issue and I'm quite certain that my head would've literally caught on fire. The kids did great and there were no significant incidents, I owe that one to God for sure.

We had a large crew early on, but by mid-afternoon, it was down to my two girls, the wonderful and dedicated Brian & Courtney, and surprisingly two of the biggest goof-offs in the production, Sam & Matt. The two boys called it quits around 5PM or so but the rest continued to press on. Around 7PM or so, Brian & Courtney had to call it quits...they'd only been there for about 10 hours! So it was the three of us. We worked for another hour or so, then my parental duties surfaced for a moment and I decided that we should get something to eat. We grabbed some food and I could tell Kelly was shot, so we dropped her off at home and Allie and I went back. She and I worked a while longer on the flats, finishing them up and then started the miserable task of cleaning up. We straightened up for a while and then realized that it was almost midnight...time for bed.

On Sunday, after church, Allie & I returned and finished cleaning up. We stashed all the paint in one of the north Mobile-Mini's...we probably had 50 separate gallons of paint. We then had to move the flats back to the PAC, one at a time, and we stashed them behind the stage wings. In our last activity of the day, we cleaned up the School's chairs that were covered with paint splatters and touched up a couple of places on the carpet. We were there for about 4 hours or so. But the flats, all 1440 square feet of scenery, were complete. There were two coats of primer and a coat of finish on every flat...that's a lot of paint!

A teacher's credentials...

Kristie told me this funny story..... The School has been blessed for years with a teacher who has dutifully taught yearbook class to the Senior High students. She abruptly resigned a couple of weeks ago, for personal reasons and nothing to do with the School or the job per se. In a mad scramble, the principal scrounged up a "suitable" replacement. This replacement was described as "a mom". Fast forward to yesterday. Kristie was doing new employee orientation and this new hire was present. Kristie did emphasize this person seems to be a terrific individual and an all around nice lady. When Kristie introduced herself she stated: "So you're the new yearbook teacher....nice to meet you". The new hire replied, "Thanks, do you know anything about this yearbook stuff? Because I don't..." Kelly signed up for yearbook this year...she already has Digital Photography, a questionable class and now Yearbook. Wednesday Elective Day is going t...
