So many movies, so little time. It's amazing when I look at how many movies we watch...as a family, we watch very little regular TV. We haven't subscribed to cable/dish in over 15 years, and for about a year or so, we didn't even own a TV. But movies...that's a whole 'nother story. We decided to watch "Shooter" the other night...Kelly had been asking to see it and since it is rated R, we did our "parental preview". In short, it passes. They lob out the "F" word a couple of times and there are some somewhat gruesome killings, but honestly, nothing worse than what we saw in James Bond, or the latest Die Hard.
And that's where the comparison belongs. This is no Die Hard. It's reasonably thrilling and exhilarating, but not to the level of Die Hard. It's not nearly as "funny" as Die Hard. About the only it has that Die Hard did not is a plot element where Marky Mark was set up as a patsy in a presidential assassination attempt. Pretty standard really. So maybe I'm a sadist and I want my violence served up on a platter that makes me laugh...but that's what was missing.
Wahlberg was okay in the movie. Danny Glover was very strange and seemed to mumble his whole part, maybe to seem "ominous". Wahlberg's "buddy" (IMDB says his name is Michael Pena) was good and was actually the most enjoyable character in the show. And the requisite girl (Kate Mara, again from IMDB) was easy on the eyes and a reasonably well written and portrayed element.
But all in all, it was just a movie. In our house we would categorize it as a good rental movie. Glad I didn't pay for it other than my standard monthly subscription to Netflix.
