We actually saw this a couple of weeks ago...but I'm just getting caught up.
All in all, it was pretty good. Man, did they cover a lot of ground! They legitimately had at least two movies worth of material (read on the web that they considered that but couldn't find a way to make that happen logically). Just a quick inventory: resolved the whole "death of Uncle Ben" thing with a new villan "the Sandman" who they attempt to appear sympathetic (didn't work for me), resolved the "you work too much" deal between Peter and MJ, introduced another new villan, Venom, and then promptly destroyed it, allowed Peter to go off the deep end and be a total EMO for a while, plus resolved the whole Harry/Peter thing, and also tossed in a little Hobgoblin/Goblin Jr. kind of action. And let Peter/Spidie get tight with Harry/Gobby when they had to work together to fight the tagteam of Venom and Sandman. Whew...no wonder this movie was over 2 hours long.
Firstly, the effects were flawless as has become the norm. I guess the days of saying "I don't think we can make that happen" are gone. Tons of high quality CGI that was flawless. I even read they made some good old fashioned models, to save time. That's a bit of a reversal if you asked me.
The actors were fine. Toby did a good job. Didn't like how Kirsten acted or looked in this movie. Seems like she kind of mailed in her performance and looked ghostly. The highlights of acting were James Franco and JK Simmons. Franco finally de-stiffened Harry enough that I enjoyed him. Too bad he had to die, but that's OK. He finally got to be a little more than a cardboard cutout. And Simmons, playing the nasty J. Jonah Jameson was the best (again) in the whole movie. I think I could see a whole movie starring him...a comedy of course. Bryce Howard and Thomas Haden Church were good in their respective parts...a little one dimensional if you asked me. But it was big movie with lot's of action..... I guess I liked how Topher Grace played the weasel that became Venom. Too bad it took so long for Venom to take him over. Oh well.
The Spiderman series is probably the "best" of the comic books to screen so far. Xmen could've, but they totally boogied number 3. I like where Batman is heading, so I'll completely ignore the original 4 (they sucked anyway). Spiderman 3 might make into our DVD collection..probably simply from inertia since we have 1 & 2 already.
